For Linda Newby Smith ’54, Marlborough provided more than an education. It gave her a life filled with confidence, connection, and community.

“I can’t imagine a life without Marlborough,” she says.

Thanks to teachers who served as models of excellence, especially by teaching strong writing skills, Linda says Marlborough equipped her with the “confidence to do what I was inspired to do.” Linda went on to receive a degree from Stanford University in history and served as a preschool and kindergarten director for many years.

Indeed, Marlborough is a cornerstone of the family’s success. Linda’s two daughters, Kathryn Smith Williams ’85 and Jennifer Smith Cowen ’89, also graduated from Marlborough. Linda’s granddaughter, Joy Williams, is a member of the Class of 2021.

“Our family shares a special bond because of Marlborough,” Linda says. “Having Joy there keeps me in touch with changes.” Changes, which Linda says, meet the needs of current generations without sacrificing Marlborough’s core values.

Linda recently supported Marlborough by establishing a charitable gift annuity, or a gift that pays you back. This allows her to receive a fixed income along with tax advantages. Most of all, the gift allows her to give now, see its impact, and enhance her connection to the school.

“Marlborough emphasizes service to community,” Linda says. “We, as donors, are teaching by example.”
