Janice Ogden Carpenter '57

Janice SmilingMarlborough School received a gift in excess of $1 million from the estate of Janice Ogden Carpenter '57 to the Leadership in Learning Campaign. In recognition of this generous bequest, and of Mrs. Carpenter's respect and fondness for the school's faculty and staff, a new space where employees can work, rest, and socialize will be named the Janice Ogden Carpenter Room.

Described by classmates as "spirited, vivacious, and a born leader with a generous heart," Janice Ogden Carpenter '57 embodied activism, service, and commitment. Mrs. Carpenter served on the Good Samaritan Hospital Board of Trustees and its various committees for more than 30 years, including as Chair of the Development Committee for many years, and was recognized in 2003 by the Hospital for her leadership and dedication. An ardent supporter of Marlborough School throughout her life, she served as past President of the school's Alumnae Council and was a lifelong fund-raiser for the Class of 1957. Mrs. Carpenter was a trustee of the Hoover Institution, a past president of the Junior League of Los Angeles, a past president of Las Madrinas, and an active and generous supporter of many other organizations, including Childrens Hospital Los Angeles and the World Affairs Council.

"Janice Carpenter was a powerful force for volunteerism in Los Angeles and a truly generous friend. She was also an enormously devoted alumna, always eager to make a difference, and a source of constant and enthusiastic support to the school," said Barbara Wagner, Head of School. "Janice loved Marlborough, and her thoughtful bequest will impact the employees of the school, and through them our students, in meaningful ways for years to come. It is a great comfort to us that Janice chose her legacy during her lifetime, so we can remember and celebrate her as she wished."
